Course Summary

This training focuses on developing an understanding of aggression and harmful sexual behaviour in (male) youth (age 12 to 18 years).  It will consider aggression and sexual risk assessment.  It will cover the use and administration of two popular structured clinical risk assessment tool for aggression and sexually harmful behaviour: the J-SOAP II (Juvenile Sex Offender Assessment Protocol II, Prentky & Righthand, 2003), and which can be applied to male adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age, as well as the SAVRY (Structured Assessment for Violence Risk in Youth, Borum, Bartel and Forth, 2003), and which can be applied to male and female adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age. Attendees will utilise case material to assess using these tools.

The training will cover:

  • Definition of harmful sexual behaviour and the cross-over with sexual violence risk.
  • Definition of aggression
  • Developmental factors crucial to understanding aggression and sexually harmful behaviour.
  • Application of the JSOAP II and SAVRY to clinical cases.
  • Formulating aggression and sexually harmful behaviour for children and adolescents.

Trainers

Professor Carol A Ireland will lead this training event. Professor Ireland is a Consultant Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist and Chartered Scientist. She has over 25 years clinical practice, with a core focus being aggression and sexual offending. Professor Ireland is lead for sexually harmful behaviour and exploitation in a child and adult treatment service, and has been a treatment lead for sexual offending services both within HM Prison Service and within a High Secure Psychiatric setting. She has also worked extensively in regard to aggression.

Course Materials

All attendees will be provided with a CPD certificate indicating attendance. Sufficient materials will be provided to allow participants to score clinical cases using the J-SOAP II and the SAVRY. The J-SOAP II manual will also be provided to all delegates (the SAVRY manual will not - delegates will need access to the SAVRY items for scoring at the event). The workshop is open to any professionals, or in-training professionals, who work with this group or are likely to do so. There are therefore no restrictions on the professions that can attend. The most common attendees are psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, community and psychiatric nurses, police officers, therapists, prison officers and probation officers
