Course Summary

This training focuses on using a newly developed tool, the CASEE (Child Adolescent Sexual Exploitation Evaluation) (version 1). This is for use when working with young people/children, to determine vulnerability and protective factors relating to being at risk of exposure to CSE. Specifically, the CASEE is aimed for professionals to use when working with young people who are at risk (including those who have been at risk, or suspected) of exposure to CSE. This is a newly developed, empirically driven tool, to assist understanding, management and support when working with young people/children. Validity studies for the tool are currently underway.

The CASEE comprises of 18 ‘vulnerability’ items with 44 sub items. The 18 items are split into three different sections: “Vulnerability items”, “Strain for the child items”, and “Situational factor items”. There are, in addition to the 18, 8 protective factor items. Each item is rated for presence, which is then developed into a formulation and vulnerability scenario plan, individualised for the young person/child.

Research populations on which the CASEE has been developed has examined CSE in males and females, albeit it the population sizes for males has tended to be much smaller. Yet, it is still felt to add value to use the CASEE with males, as opposed to omitting its use.

The research populations have included those who have been approached in regard to CSE but not successfully exploited, those who have been approached and then successfully exploited, and those who have never been approached. It is further informed by professionals working with CSE victims.

Broadly speaking, the population suggested with the CASEE are young people/children aged 11 to 17 years. However, it could be utilised with young people falling just outside of these ranges (as a guide), but with some caution applied and understanding of the literature.

The population for consideration can include those felt to be at risk of being exposed to CSE, those being actively exploited and/or who have been exploited.

The training will cover:

  • Brief introduction to Child Sexual Exploitation
  • Introducing the Protect and Vulnerability Model against CSE (PVM: CSE) underpinning the CASEE (Alderson, Ireland et al 2022)
  • Introducing the CASEE (Child Adolescent Sexual Exploitation Evaluation)
  • Working through case studies to understand and apply the tool

Dr Carol A Ireland will lead this training event. Dr Ireland is a Consultant Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist and Chartered Scientist. She has over 25 years clinical practice, with a core focus being sexual exploitation, sexual offending and aggression. Dr Ireland is a treatment lead for sexually harmful behaviour for a child and adult therapy service, and has been a treatment lead for sexual offending services both within HM Prison Service and within a High Secure Psychiatric setting.
