Course Summary

The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS™) measures the positive and negative syndromes of schizophrenia and other psychoses, as well as capturing general psychopathology. It is designed to be a relatively brief assessment that can be used repeatedly and to identify change in presentation. The PANSS has value in the development of treatment plans and when capturing medication effects, such as in clinical drug trials. It allows for a determination of which specific symptom(s) have improved, worsened or remained unchanged.

The PANSS is used primarily to assess symptom severity in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, as opposed to providing a specific diagnosis. It is routinely used to assess a variety of disorders, such as bipolar disorder and affective psychoses.

Delegates will have the SCI-PANSS (Structured Clinical Interview – Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale) demonstrated as a means of scoring the PANSS. This will include use of video case studies to practice scoring. The event will capture how to reach agreed scorings and how to enhance reliability. Group calibration exercises will be used to achieve this.

The cost includes provision of handouts, reading material and CPD certificate. There are limited places on this course.

To attend the event you must have a copy of the Structured Clinical Interview – Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (SCI-PANSS), so that you can complete ratings. This will be provided as part of this training.

For those wanting to use the PANSS post the training you will require the PANSS Technical Manual, scoring forms and further copies of the SCI-PANSS. We are not distributors for this but you can purchase the manual and rating sheets from https://www.pearsonclinical.co.uk/ for your future use.

The training commences at 9:30am and ends by 4:30pm on each day. Any queries can be directed to tiofp@tiofp.com.

Who Can Attend

The PANSS is classed as a b-level assessment. This means users should have an understanding of the basic principles and limitations of psychological testing, particularly in relation to psychological interpretation. The PANSS can be administered and scored by trained mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and forensic mental health [psychiatric] nurses. It can also be applied by mental health researchers receiving supervision by qualified mental health professionals, if the intention is to use the PANSS for research purposes. Overall, a prerequisite to using the PANSS is the ability to interview those with mental health challenges, including those with schizophrenia.
