Date

10th July 2023, 9.30am - 4.30pm (UK Time)

Course Summary

This event will consider the challenges that can emerge when working through the EMDR protocol with some clients, specifically when a client’s ability to process becomes blocked. For example, this can include (yet not exclusively) clients who struggle to access their reactions due to learnt avoidance as a method of managing their distress when efforts to process using EMDR is made, yet who present with a motivation to engage. This event therefore covers strategies to maximise the opportunity for a client to progress successfully through the EMDR protocol, using Expressive Writing (Pennebaker and Evans, 2014). As part of this, the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model is considered. Time will also capture the application of this to managing any emerging abreactions in the EMDR therapist, should this occur, to further maximise the effective therapist-client relationship and ultimate effective use of the EMDR protocol. Overall, this event is aimed to empower clinicians to feel confident with the EMDR protocol and AIP when engaging with clients who become blocked in processing, and by further maintaining therapist self-care. The use of expressive writing, self-care methods, and group discussion will be used illustrate and develop learning. Focus will be on the standard EMDR protocol.
